Thank you for your email, transferred by the Ministry of Health | Manatū Hauora to Health
New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora (Health NZ) on 12 January 2026, asking for the following under the
Of icial Information Act 1982 (the OIA):
I am writing to request information regarding the number of Nuclear Medicine Gastric
Emptying Scintigraphy (gastric emptying studies) performed annually in New Zealand.
Specifically, I request the following data for the most recent three financial years (e.g.,
2022/23, 2023/24, and 2024/25), broken down by region (District) where possible:
If available, a breakdown of these totals between publicly funded (performed in public
hospitals) and privately funded procedures reported to the National Minimum Dataset
(NMDS).
Response
To provide you with further context in relation to our response set out in the attached
Appendix One,
please note that the information contained in the spreadsheets is not comparable across the years
requested or across the former District Health Boards or Health NZ districts.
This is because the data is recorded dif erently and in different systems across districts and results in
significant variances in the data provided. While projects to standardise data collection and reporting
across Aotearoa are underway at Health NZ, these wil take time.
In addition, please note that the data provided for this response is provisional, in that it has not been
through the full quality assurance process that we use before publishing data and is subject to
change. Published data may differ from the provisional data presented here. Published data should
be considered the most accurate source and used wherever possible.
