Dear Erika,
Official Information Request for Hospitalisation Definition
I refer to your official information request transferred to the New Zealand Institute for Public Health
and Forensic Science Limited (‘PHF Science’) on Monday 23 February 2026 for the following
information:
“Would you please define Hospitalization in the information you have provide? Was it an acute
stay? Or a long-term stay?”
Our Response:
PHF Science applies the same definition for a hospital admission as that used by Health New
Zealand’s National Collections. The full definition is available in the National Collections glossary
which can be found in the following link:
https://www.tewhatuora.govt.nz/for-health-professionals/data-and-statistics/nz-health-
statistics/data-references/#appendix-b-national-collections-glossary
PHF Science does not collect information on the length of stay, so we are unable to distinguish
between acute or long-term stays.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this decision.
Information about how to make a complaint is available at
www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or
freephone 0800 802 602.
Yours sincerely,
Kirsten Beynon
