Tēnā koe James,
Official Information Act request for communications with the office of the President of
the United States
Thank you for your Official Information Act 1982 (the Act) request of 10 November 2025.
Your request was transferred by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) in part to
the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (DPMC) on 19 November 2025. You
requested:
“
Under the Official Information Act 1982, I request:
-
Copies of all communications, correspondence, briefing notes, or reports
between: The New Zealand Government (including the Prime Minister,
the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, and the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs and Trade), and The Office of the President of the United
States (specifically President Donald J. Trump or President Joseph R.
Biden Jr.), during the period 1 January 2021 to the present.
-
I request all copies of all email correspondence (including attachments)
between the above offices from 1 January 2021 to 31 January 2021,
where either “Donald Trump” or “Joe Biden” is mentioned in the subject
line or body.”
We have understood the part of your request transferred to DPMC to be for any
communications not held by MFAT between DPMC and the President of the United States’
White House office from 1 January 2021 to the present. This would include any email
correspondence from 1 January 2021 to 31 January 2021 between DPMC and the President
of the United States’ White House office where either “Donald Trump” or “Joe Biden” is
mentioned in the subject line or body.
No DPMC communications with the President of the United States’ White House office have
been identified within the timeframe of your request. Accordingly, the part of your request
transferred to DPMC is refused under section 18(e) of the Act on the basis that the requested
communications do not exist.
You have the right to ask the Ombudsman to investigate and review my decision under
section 28(3) of the Act.
We do not intend to publish this response on the Department of the Prime Minister and
Cabinet’s website.
Nāku noa, nā
