- **EMI source attribution:** For EMI cases, include both incidents where the
smart meter is identified as the source and those where the meter is otherwise
implicated, even if another factor is recorded as the source.
- **Data format:** Where full disaggregation is not possible, please provide the
information in the form in which it is held, in accordance with section 16 OIA. A
high-level summary (e.g., total numbers of appliance damage, EMI interference,
and meter failures, with breakdowns by make/model where available) will suffice.
We sought to clarify which of three we should proceed with and received a response
from you on 26 September 2025.
Response
WorkSafe has interrogated its Energy Safety case management system and identified
that since 1 January 2015 it has received six notifications about incidents which, on
investigation, were found to have directly involved a smart electricity meter. This does
not include incidents which were primarily related to faults with other fittings or how
they were installed.
The meter make or model was identified in only one of those events. In that case, the
make was given as EDMI but the model was not specified.
In none of these events was there reported damage to appliances associated with the
incident.
In none of these events was there reported electromagnetic interference.
No other notification to WorkSafe involved replacement of a smart meter specifically as a
result of a fault or failure of the meter.
