Kia ora koutou
We have had a complaint on X about a candidate in the Tāmaki Makaurau by-election
posting election advertising without a promoter statement. The complainant has asked us
to go back to them via direct message to confirm we are investigating.
I have looked at the candidate’s campaign Facebook page
(https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61578317851789) and personal Facebook
profile (https://www.facebook.com/oriini.kaipara) and there does not appear to be a
promoter statement. There is however a promoter statement on the candidate’s Instagram
profile (https://www.instagram.com/oriini kaipara/) but this is not mentioned in the
complaint.
The complainant also mentions that others have been sharing the election advertising
without a promoter statement (see the screenshot) – however I assume this could come
under personal views?
Rather than give a blanket statement that we are investigating (which could be
inflammatory) I would prefer to go back to the complainant with an outcome and an
explanation of the rules if possible.
Screenshots and a link to the complaint are below.

Kia ora Lance,

We have received an enquiry regarding the lack of promoter statements on Oriini Kaipara’s Faceook
pages:

(15) Facebook
(15) Facebook

Can you please arrange for Oriini Kaipara to put her promoter statement on these pages – it can be
placed on the main home page or in the ‘About’ section’.

Subject: TPM Candidate promoter statement complaint

Kia ora Karl,

We recently received a complaint that the Te Pāti Māori candidate for the Tāmaki
Makaurau by-election did not have a promoter statement on two of her Facebook
pages.

Following our usual practice, we contacted Lance Norman, party secretary for TPM,
and asked if he could assist their candidate in updating the Facebook pages.  Lance
responded the next day advising us that both Facebook pages now had promoter
statements. We have checked the pages, and they now have compliant promoter
statements.

As you may recall, this is a fairly common oversight by various parties and candidates
on their social media pages, and we do not usually take any further action for a social
media account not carrying a promoter statement if it is remedied quickly.

NFA is consistent with precedents   2023 Log of Alleged Breaches and
Complaints.xlsx

In this case we are just checking you are comfortable with no further action for an
enquiry from the complainant.
