I wanted to take a moment to update you on the appointment process for RBNZ’s
Act
Governor for a period of six months.
While the formal process of appointing a Governor for a period of six months is in train,
decision-making authority remains with Christian Hawkesby as Acting Governor.
I appreciate that you are eager for certainty and will keep you updated as we are able to
do so.
Information
In the meantime, I want to acknowledge Christian’s and the rest of ELT’s leadership
during this period of transition. I want to also thank all of you for maintaining the critical
functions of the Bank and our momentum on our many projects. I am proud of the way
in which everyone is working to ensure that as much as possible we continue with
business as usual.

Today, on the recommendation of the Board, the Minister of Finance will announce that
Christian Hawkesby has been appointed as RBNZ Governor for a period of six months.
This will be effective from 8 April 2025 to 7 October 2025.
As you all know, Christian has been acting Governor since early March. I want to thank
Christian for his leadership and expertise during this transition period. His appointment
as Governor for this six-month period reflects both his contributions and our
confidence in his ability to continue providing leadership to the Reserve Bank and the
New Zealand financial system.
I acknowledge that we are in a time of adjustment, but I hope this announcement will
reduce uncertainty about the next few months. Thank you all for your ongoing support
and patience as we navigate this period of change.
