Request for information
Thank you for your Official Information Act 1982 (OIA) request of 14 July 2025. You
asked for information regarding policies, protocols, or internal guidelines relating to
romantic couples working together in frontline operational roles.
My response to each part of your request can be found below.
1.
Does the New Zealand Police have any policies, protocols, or internal guidelines
(including health and safety or operational procedures) relating to romantic couples
(including married or de facto partners) working together in frontline operational
roles? Please provide copies of any such policies or documents.
Police’s Managing Conflicts of Interest Policy and Code of Conduct can be found on our
website, through the below links:
https://www.police.govt.nz/about-us/publication/managing-conflicts-interest-police-
manual-chapter
https://www.police.govt.nz/about-us/publication/new-zealand-police-code-conduct
2.
Please advise whether such policies are mandatory or voluntary, and whether
compliance is expected or optional.
Al employees are required to comply with the organisation’s Code of Conduct and
relevant internal policies. These standards are mandatory and form a fundamental part of
our professional and ethical obligations.
3.
Are there any health and safety risk assessments or considerations undertaken by
Police when romantic couples are rostered together in operational roles (e.g. general
duties, response teams, etc)?
Every conflict of interest is considered on a case-by-case basis and may be investigated
if Police deems necessary. Non-compliance may result in appropriate management or
disciplinary action, in accordance with our established procedures.
Please note that as part of its commitment to openness and transparency, Police
proactively releases some information and documents that may be of interest to the
public. An anonymised version of this response may be publicly released on the New
Zealand Police website.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this
decision. Information about how to make a complaint is available at
www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or freephone 0800 802 602.
