Thank you for your email dated 19 June 2025 to Te Kaunihera o Pōneke | Wellington City
Council (the Council). Your request has been considered under the Local Government Official
Information and Meetings Act 1987 (LGOIMA).
1. Is there a budget for maintenance of Hawkins Hil Road in terms of removal of
problematic trees or restoring land or berms where trees have been removed by
wind or otherwise?
2. Which department manages the budget? What is the allocation of funds is called so
we can apply to remedy recent storm damage where it has damaged an existing
fence/ entrance way to private land.
The Council’s Parks, Sport and Recreation (PSR) business unit holds budgets associated with
tree management, restoration planting, storm remediation and general reserves
maintenance which includes restoration activities in Te Kopahou Reserve which Hawkins Hil
Road Right of Way passes through.
The level of remediation or restoration undertaken after a tree has fal en or been removed is
site specific and dependant on several factors, including but not limited to vehicle safety
(sightlines from driveways), ongoing maintenance and reserve management plan goals,
which can be found in more detail for this area in the
outer-green-belt-management-
plan.pdf (Sector 7: Te Kopahou Reserve, pages 181 to 203).
Dependent on the scale of the storm damage, Council would either complete this work itself
or residents and community groups can apply for plants through our website
(Plants for
volunteer roadside and reserve planting - Environment - Wel ington City Council).
3. Who would we best contact?
There are active community groups in Te Kopahou Reserve who may be interested in
restoring the site depending on its location and their current restoration programme.
Our Parks Services Team are best contacted to assess the site on Hawkins Hill Road Right of
Way and can either connect you with the local community group or direct you to the free
plants programme mentioned above. They can be contacted either
via
[email address] or hawkinshil @wcc.govt.nz.
Please note, we may proactively release our response to your request with your personal
information removed.
You have the right, by way of complaint under section 28(1) of the LGOIMA, to request an
