Official information Act – Information request about surveil ance
Thank you for your email of 21 February 2025 to the Ministry of Justice. Your request has been
referred to me for response, as it falls within my responsibilities as Director, National Security
Operations and is being managed in accordance with the provisions of the Official Information Act
1982 (the Act).
You have requested information about any surveil ance by the Ministry of Justice towards Mr
Barry Young. Specifically, you requested:

Detailed records of any surveil ance hours spent monitoring Barry Young, including
specific dates and time and cost associated
•
The authority under which this surveil ance was approved, including the names of
individuals or agencies involved in granting such approval.
•
Legal opinions or assessments confirming that all surveil ance activities conducted
were compliant with relevant laws and regulations.
•
Identification of all agencies involved in the surveil ance operations related to Barry
Young.
•
Any reports or documentation that outline the objectives and outcomes of the
surveil ance.
•
Information regarding the basis for any surveil ance approvals, including legal
justifications and any relevant policies or guidelines.
Your request for this information is refused in full under section 18(e) of the Act, as the
information sought does not exist or, despite reasonable efforts to locate it, cannot be found.
