17 MĀTAURANGA MĀORI ADVICE
AND PROCESSES
HDC is committed to our journey to honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and our work to promote and protect
the rights of everyone using health and disability services in Aotearoa New Zealand. HDC’s Māori
Directorate leads the way in helping HDC to honour its Te Tiriti obligations and ensure that our
processes are accessible and meet the needs of Māori.
The Māori Directorate provides evidence-based advice to the Health and Disability Commissioner to
ensure that our complaints process is responsive to Māori. The team offers leadership and direction
through the learnings of a tikanga-led complaints process and provides internal support to staff with
mātauranga Māori understandings and its application, in support of HDC’s aspiration of being an
inclusive and culturally safe organisation.
