Your request for official information, reference: HNZ00078981
Thank you for your email on 12 February 2025, asking Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora for the
following under the Of icial Information Act 1982 (the Act):
The monthly recorded incidence presenting clinically in the following settings: primary care,
hospital emergency department or hospital admission for the condition of tonic-clonic /
grand mal seizure that presents as status epilepticus; a new or recent grand mal seizure
(tonic-clonic seizure); death associated with grand mal seizure (tonic-clonic seizure), for the
monthly periods from 01/01/2020 to 31/12/2024 (60 months).
Response
A response to your request is set out below. To provide you with further context in terms of your
request, please note the following, Health New Zealand does not receive national level data about
diagnoses made by primary care providers, for example GPs. We therefore cannot provide data
about people treated in a primary care setting for the conditions you’ve requested as this
information is not held by us and is refused under section 18(g)(i) of the Act.
In addition, national level hospitalisations data is not available between July 2024 to December
2024. After hospitals report data to Health NZ, we undertake a data quality review process to
ensure completeness and accuracy of the data before we release this publicly.
The monthly recorded incidence presenting clinically in the following settings: primary care,
hospital emergency department or hospital admission for the condition of tonic-clonic /
grand mal seizure that presents as status epilepticus; a new or recent grand mal seizure
(tonic-clonic seizure);
We are, however, able to provide you with information on the counts per month of publicly funded
hospital discharges with recorded primary diagnoses of ‘G40.6 Grand mal seizures, unspecified
(with or without petit mal)’ and ‘G41.0 Grand mal status epilepticus’ for the period July 2019 to
June 2024. This information is attached in
Appendix One.
Please note the following about the data in Appendix One:
• As this is a count of hospitalisations, people hospitalised multiple times (transfers,
readmissions, multiple incidents) are counted each time.
• Data from July 2023 onwards is provisional. This is data which has not undergone the
validation process that we use for published data and is subject to change.
Death associated with grand mal seizure (tonic-clonic seizure), for the monthly periods from
01/01/2020 to 31/12/2024 (60 months).
Please note, the most recent year for which cause of death data available is 2020. After the close
of a calendar year, there is a 12-18 month process to assign cause of death codes to the majority
of deaths in that year. Health NZ reviews the death certificate and health history of the deceased,
to assign cause of death codes. Approximately 10% of deaths are referred to the coroner each
year to determine the cause. Deaths which require a coronial inquiry can take 2-3 or more years
for cause of death to be determined. We do not make mortality data available publicly until the
majority of deaths have been assigned a cause of death, so that the data we release is complete
and accurate. The Chief Coroner has noted delays in the time it is taking them to determine cause
of death.
In response to your request the number of deaths registered in 2019 and 2020 with the following
underlying causes of death were:
‘G40.6 Grand mal seizures, unspecified (with or without petit mal)’
2019 = 1 (in March)
2020 = 1 (in February)
‘G41.0 Grand mal status epilepticus’
2019 = 1 (this death occurred in June 2017 and was registered in 2019)
2020 = 1 (in July)
