Tēnā koe Edwin
Thank you for your request of 13 October 2024 to Te Kaunihera o Pōneke | Wel ington City Council
(the Council) requesting information regarding the electric vehicle charger station in Island Bay
. Your
request has been considered under the Local Government Of icial Information and Meetings Act 1987
(LGOIMA). Please find my response below.
1. Did WCC or Wtg Regional Council pay for the Zero charging station opposite Island Bay New
World?
The Council has instal ed Zero charger stations across Wel ington city as part of the ‘Charged Up
Capital’ programme funded in the 2021 Long-term Plan (LTP).
2. If so, what was the cost?
The cost for the charger station in Island Bay, which comprises two electric vehicle chargers, was
$97,848.72 excluding GST. The charger station was signed off and made live for public use on the 12
September 2024.
3. Are these being implemented to make a profit or break even?
At the time of budget approval, officers estimated that the charger network would make a profit and
have a positive Net Present Value (NPV).
4. Why would WCC/WRC even be involved in this at al ? What is the public policy reason?
The ‘Charged Up Capital’ programme was approved to support delivery of the Te Atakura - First to
Zero blueprint which has electrification of Wellington’s vehicle fleet as one of “
The seven big moves
for a Zero Carbon Wel ington”. The project was allocated funding in the 2021 LTP to deliver 60
chargers over five years, and so far, 34 chargers have been installed. In the 2024 LTP, Council ors
have asked for the project to be reviewed.
