Tēnā koe,
Thank you for your request to the Department of Conservation, received on 29 September
2024, in which you asked for:
Almost every time I walk along the Waihi Beach to Orokawa Bay track (starting
at the Waihi Beach north end) I see people walking their dogs along there
(sometimes on leash, other times not). I walk the track many times per week.
It clearly states at the beginning of the track that it is illegal to take a dog along
the track.
Please advise:
In 2023, how many dog owners were (for taking their dog on the track):
- Warned
- Fined
In 2024, year to date, how many dog owners were (for taking their dog on the
track):
- Warned
- Fined
We have considered your request under the Of icial Information Act 1982.
Your questions and our responses are listed below:
1. In 2023, how many dog owners were (for taking their dog on the track):
-
Warned
-
Fined
No fines have been issued and no one has been formally warned on a track from
Waihi Beach to Ōrokawa Bay over the past two years. If the public find a dog where a
dog is not allowed, they can report to DOC by calling 0800DOCHOT.
2. In 2024, year to date, how many dog owners were (for taking their dog on the
track)

In making my decision, I have considered the public interest considerations in section 9(1) of
the Official Information Act and determined there are no public interests that outweigh the
grounds for withholding.
Please note that this letter (with your personal details removed) may be published on the
Department’s website.
