OIA request 23/24 1075 Request for number of amended birth certificates
Thank you for your Official Information Act (Act) request received by the Department of Internal
Affairs (Department) on 16 June 2024.
You requested –
I wish to know the total number of amended birth certificates made by statutory
declaration under the Births, Deaths, Marriages and Relationships Registration Bill 2021
which became active on 15 June 2023.
I do not wish to know any other detail than the total number of amended documents, for
privacy reasons.
On 20 June 2024 you were contacted via email for clarification of your request.
A fol ow up email was sent to you on 1 July 2024 which you responded to on the same day with
the clarification of your request.
On 2 July 2024 we advised that any clarification or amendment of a request is considered to be
a new request for the purpose of calculating the maximum statutory timeframe for response
pursuant to section 15(1AA) of the Act and your request was amended and confirmed as:

I would like the number of birth certificates where the sex marker was changed during
the specified period. If a breakdown of those changes can be provided, as in M to F, F to
M and F to non-binary.
In response to your request, I can provide you with the fol owing information.
Caveats to data
- The data was col ated on 4 July 2024 and is accurate as at this date
- All changes made in 2023 were complete from 15 June 2023
- As the data is extracted from dynamic systems, there may be small variances when
compared with prior or future datasets.

I must advise that the Department does not record a breakdown of amendments from the
original gender to current gender and would require manual assessment of each individual
record. Therefore, I must refuse this portion of your request pursuant to section 18(f) that the
information requested cannot be made available without substantial col ation or research.
As this information may be of interest to other members of the public, the Department has
decided to proactively release a copy of this response on its website. Al requestor data,
including your name and contact details, will be removed prior to release. The released
