REF: OIA-15915
Dear Requestor
Request made under the Official Information Act 1982
Thank you for your email of 3 June 2024 requesting information from the Ministry of Transport on
approved automated infringement systems under the Land Transport Act 1988 (LTA). As aspects of
your request were more closely connected to the functions of NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi
(NZTA), the following was transferred to us on 17 July 2024 and considered under the provisions of
the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act):
Please provide a complete list of al approved automated infringement systems (including vehicle
surveil ance equipment and point-to-point average speed systems), and the names of private
companies contracted to operate and maintain said systems.
There are no automated infringement systems approved under sections 139AA to 139AAC of the LTA.
In terms of vehicle surveillance equipment, NZTA is using the
Halo 2 cameras as redlight, spot speed
and average speed safety cameras. These cameras have been approved for use in the
Land
Transport (Approved Vehicle Surveillance Equipment) Notice 2023. NZTA will also be using Redflex
NK7 cameras, which are currently used by NZ Police, and are approved under th
e Land Transport
(Approved Vehicle Surveillance Equipment) Notice 2021. The company that will be operating and maintaining these systems on behalf of NZTA is Redflex
Traffic Systems Pty (trading as Verra Mobility).
We understand that Auckland Transport and Christchurch City Council operate Verra Mobility redlight
camera systems and that NZ Police process any infringements these council devices capture. As
NZTA does not hold any information on the private companies contracted to operate and maintain
these systems, we have transferred this part of your request to Auckland Transport and to
Christchurch City Council for a response to you.
If you would like to discuss this reply with NZTA, please contact Ministerial Services by email to
[email address].
Yours sincerely
Tara Macmillan
