Thunderstorm Outlook
A weakening low in the Tasman Sea will approach New
Zealand today, while associated rain-bands will move across
the country today with a few embedded heavy falls.
The risk of thunderstorms is considered low over most of the
North Island, and parts of the northern and southern South
Island. About eastern Bay of Plenty, especially the ranges, the
risk of thunderstorms embedded within broader areas of rain
is considered moderate.
Any thunderstorms that occur today will produce localised
heavy rain. There may also be other areas of localised areas
of heavy rain about the northern and central North Island, and
also the southern South Island, which could occur with or
without thunderstorms and produce localised rainfall rates of
10-20mm/h.
Severe Weather Outlook
From Sunday to Tuesday, an unsettled south to southeast
flow affects central parts of the country, bringing rain or
showers, especially to eastern areas. On Wednesday, the
flow over the country turns southwest.
At present there is uncertainty with which areas will see the
most rain in the unsettled south to southeast flow, and
whether the rain will be heavy enough to meet warning level
thresholds. However, for Marlborough from the latter part of
Sunday into Monday there is low confidence for significant
amounts of heavy rain; and for Hawke's Bay on Tuesday
there is also low confidence for warning amounts of rain.
Prepared by the NEMA Monitoring, Alerting and Reporting Centre to provide awareness that supports informed decision making.
