The Tertiary Education Union - Te Hautu Kahurangi o Aotearoa
is the only union that covers and is dedicated to all staff working in
tertiary education.
We have over 10,000 members nationwide working in universities, institutes of technology and
polytechnics, wānanga, and other tertiary education providers.
We are a movement of people working col ectively to defend and promote quality public
tertiary education that is accessible to al . We work to address a wide range of issues affecting
students and staff. We do this because we know staff conditions of work are students’
conditions of learning.
What do we do:

Negotiate collective agreements to secure pay and conditions that recognise our
members’ commitment to quality tertiary education, and the time, energy, and skil they
put into tertiary education
●
Collectively take action to get better funding for our tertiary education system; to
ensure retention of programmes, courses, and jobs; fair pay for general staff; for
academic freedom; for pay equity and secure work; and, to ensure general and
academic staff have a voice in decision-making
●
Represent and support people individual y with employment issues as required
How we operate:
● TEU is a
democratically organised union with representatives elected national y and
local y
● Our annual conference, council, and national committees lead the national work-plan;
local branches lead activism local y; and our networks – U35, Te Uepū, Rainbow,
Women’s, and Pasifika – ensure
strong representation across our union
● Our
highly trained staff in Auckland, Hamilton, Palmerston North, Wel ington,
Christchurch and Dunedin regularly visit every site, lead our col ective agreement
negotiations, and support members as required
