Impact on Wellington economy of significant cuts to the public service
Thank you for your request made under the Local Government Official Information and Meetings
Act 1987 (the Act), received on 13 October 2023.
Wel ington City Council has partially granted your request for information.
• Reports, briefings, notes, speaking notes, aide’s memoire or similar regardless
of description prepared since 1 June 2023 outlining the like impact on the
Wel ington economy of significant job cuts to the core public service.
In August 2023 Wel ington City Council engaged Infometrics to look at the
future of the economy as part of building the Long Term Plan. The report covers
what a different government might mean for Wel ington on page 13. The part
of the report that relates to the impact of different government has been
included as appendix 1.
• Information on the model ing the Council wil have done on this and any plans
the Council has to mitigate these risks as part of its risk management planning.
Wel ington City Council has not undertaken model ing on the impact on the
economy. As such we have refused this part of your request under section 17
(e) of the Act as the document al eged to contain the information requested
does not exist. Please note while model ing has not been undertaken in direct
response to the Infometrics report we note that the state of the economy is a
consideration in all our analysis on affordability of our community.
In terms of mitigations, ou
r Economic Wellbeing Strategy aims to grow and
diversify those sectors of our economy that are not reliant on government, for
example film, gaming, tech, and finance sectors.
• Public statements from the Mayor or Council officers on the impact of
significant cuts to the public service on Wel ington City.
The mayor’s office and our strategic communications teams have confirmed no
statements have been made on the impact of public service cuts to Wel ington.
As such we have refused this part of your request under section 17 (e) of the
Act as the document al eged to contain the information requested does not
exist.
