Response to your official information request
Thank you for your official information request received on 15 August 2023 for “a copy of
the Guidance on mapping to support applications for recognition of customary interests
under the Marine and Coastal Area (Takutai Moana) Act 2011 Version 1.0 of 24 July 2023,
the interim guidelines for mapping recognition orders of 14 April 2022, and copies of
relevant gazette notices for both of these.”
Some of the information you have requested is released in full. A pdf of the interim
guidelines for mapping recognition orders of 14 April 2022 is attached.
However, your request for information relating to the guidance on mapping to support
applications for recognition of customary interests under the Marine and Coastal Area
(Takutai Moana) Act 2011 has been refused under section 18(d) of the Official Information
Act. This is because the information requested is publicly available. You can view and
download it from the LINZ website here:
https://www.linz.govt.nz/guidance/marine-
information/customary-interests
The interim guidance was produced at short notice to enable the Court to make a
decision on the extent of the Customary Marine Title (CMT) areas in one of the first cases.
The subsequent more robust Mapping Guidance was developed to help the many other
applicants preparing maps of areas over which they are seeking recognition of customary
interests.
Your request for copies of relevant gazette notices has also been refused under section
18(e) of the Official Information Act, as the documents al eged to contain the information
requested do not exist. Gazette notices were not required for this guidance.
We have also received another Official Information Act request from you on this topic.
The link to the Mapping Guidance provided above contains further links to information
which may address your concerns. After exploring these links you may wish to withdraw

or modify your request in light of information that is already available through LINZ or Te
