Your request for information under the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act 1987 
(LGOIMA) – (case number CAS-721639-F5B9L9) 
I refer to your official information request dated 1 May 2023 regarding tower sites and streetlights managed 
by Auckland Transport. 
 
I have answered your questions in the order you have asked them. 
 
1.What is the total number of (a) tower sites and (b) streetlight mounted sites that are currently in operation 
in the road reserve/ land control ed by Auckland Transport. 
112 cel  sites + 42 Microcel  sites. 
 
2. How many proposed sites that are not yet in operation is Auckland Transport aware of/ have applications 
for. 
There are 22 sites for the financial year of 22/23. 
 
3. How long is the lease term for sites administered by Auckland Transport and what is the average lease 
fee/administration fee per site. 
There is no lease fee nor lease term arrangement under the process. AT can charge a reasonable fee for 
administration of applications etc. These are our current fees: 
Processing fee of One (1) NEW site - $978.26 + gst per site 
For Microcel s - $54.05 + gst – per cell site/per year 
For Road cel  site - $115 + gst- per cell site/per year 
 
4. How many proposed tower/ streetlight mounted tower sites have been moved by Auckland Transport due 
to road safety reasons. Please include the details of the initial proposed locations and the final locations as 
put forward by Auckland Transport. 
AT can influence the instal ations with reasonable requirements, and this is typical y shown as asking for any 
pole to be moved a few metres e.g. further from an intersection or well back from the kerbside.  This also 
applies to associated equipment cabinets (if any). Designs are not modified by AT. 
 
5. Was there any design review process to optimise the look of the towers, streetlight mounted towers to 
minimise the impact on visual amenity. If so can you please provide more information on this, or explain how 
the current grey cylinder look was decided upon.   
The tower instal ations are control ed by the telco’s which includes design. AT is aware that at least one telco 
has modified their own design at upgrade stage to have equipment enclosed in a cylinder rather than 
exposed. AT is not aware that that modification is for technical or aesthetic reasons.

Some telco applications for sites on private land or buildings may be covered by Auckland Council Resource 
Management Act 1991 requirements rather than Auckland Transport which manages the road corridors 
only.  For road sites the Utilities Act restricts the actions of local Councils to little more than influence. For its 
part, Auckland Transport works with telco companies to ensure that their chosen locations are safe within 
the road reserve area. 
 
 
We trust this clarifies your request, but should you believe that we have not dealt with your request 
appropriately, you are able to make a complaint to the Office of the Ombudsman in accordance with section 
27(3) of the LGOIMA Act and seek an investigation and review in regard to this matter.
