Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) – Updates to Programme
Limits
The Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) is a limited entry programme. The
2024 Programme Limitations, approved earlier this year, established both the maximum
enrolment numbers and the selection criteria for this programme.
Following the approval of the 2024 Programme Limitations, the Government announced
additional funding for domestic medical students. Acting Dean of the Faculty of Medical and
Health Sciences (FMHS) Warwick Bagg has discussed this matter with his counterpart at the
University of Otago and has confirmed that FMHS can now accept 30 additional domestic
students into the MBChB programme in 2024.
Approval is now sought to add these 30 additional places to the 2024 Programme Limitations,
raising the total of domestic students from 287 to 317. In addition, approval is also being
sought to add two additional selection criteria to the MBChB – specifically a prohibition on post
acceptance deferral of start/commencement dates, and a restriction on the amount of aegrotats
that can be permitted for students in their first year prior to entering Year 2.

Professor John Fraser PhD, FRSNZ Dean, Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences University of Auckland
