I refer to your email of 30 June 2023, in which you request the following under the Official
Information Act 1982 (OIA):
The PM is being accompanied to China by the winning Te Matatini Kapa Haka group.
Under the OIA please provide the following information.
1. The total number of performers/support staff and people associated with the
group travelling?
2. Total travel costs/ budget for the group - accommodation, food and beverage,
per diems and any other associated costs.
3. Itinerary of the group - where and when the performances are taking place?
4. Which government department is covering the costs?
On 31 July 2023, the timeframe for responding to your request were extended by an additional
25 working days due to the consultations necessary to make a decision on your request
(15A(1)(b) of the OIA refers).
A response to each part of your request is set out below.
1. The total number of performers/support staff and people associated with the group
travelling?
The total number of performers associated with the group travelling was sixteen.
2. Total travel costs/ budget for the group - accommodation, food and beverage, per diems and
any other associated costs.
The total budget for the Kapa Haka group was NZD$80,000. The total costs for the Kapa
Haka group was NZD$52,481.69. The following is a description of what the total costs
were spent on:

3. Itinerary of the group - where and when the performances are taking place?
In accordance with section 16(e) of the OIA, please find below a summary of the itinerary
for the Kapa Haka Group:
I.
Pōwhiri (26 June) and cultural performances at two Gala Dinners (Beijing
(28 June) and Shanghai (29 June) of 30 minute performance brackets.
II.
Tikanga support and performance at Peking University, in support of
Prime Minister (28 June)
III.
International representation and engagement at events hosted at Post in
Beijing (26 June) and Shanghai (29 June); and
IV.
NZ Māori Tourism promotional event at The Great Wall of China (27 June)
V.
Participation and representation in various Delegation programme
events.(26 – 29 June)
4. Which government department is covering the costs?
The following government agencies helped provide the budget for the Kapa Haka group:
NZ Māori Tourism (contributed $11,500.00);
Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment – Tourism (contributed
$11,500.00);
Tourism New Zealand (contributed $11,500.00);
Ministry for Primary Industries (contributed $11,500.00);
New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (contributed $11,500.00);
New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (contributed $17,500.00);
Education New Zealand (contributed $5,000.00).
