Information Request – Statistics of Operational Firefighters
We refer to your official information request dated 9 June 2023 asking for the following
information:
A breakdown by number and percentage in an excel/CSV file that shows the number of operational
firefighters by region, rank and ethnicity
We have interpreted your request to be for career firefighters currently in an operational role.
In accordance with the provisions of the Official Information Act 1982 (OIA), please find
enclosed a
document outlining
the number of operational firefighters by region rank and ethnicity.
The percentages of career firefighters by ethnicity is provided in our annual report, available here

Ethnicity is counted based on information provided by firefighters. Some firefighters may identify
with more than one ethnicity. For example, if a firefighter identifies as Māori and Asian they will
be included in both the Māori and Asian count. Therefore, these values and percentages may total
more than the number of current operational career fighters or more than 100% of the total.
