RESPONSE TO YOUR OFFICIAL INFORMATION ACT REQUEST
Thank you for your email of 30 April 2023 in which you requested, pursuant to the Official
Information Act (the Act), the following information:

…an extract of the annual amount spent with al suppliers for the 2021/2022 financial
year. I would like this data in an open format, csv or json formats would be suitable.

I would like the following details provided:
- Supplier Name
- Suppliers NZBN number (if available)
- Total Amount Spent
On 29 May, the Ministry of Defence extended your request by 15 working days to 20 June in
order to assess all of this information that was captured as part of your request.
Attached is the requested information relating to the 2021/22 departmental spend on
suppliers by the Ministry of Defence.
One of the key functions of the Ministry of Defence is to purchase military equipment on
behalf of the New Zealand Defence Force to ensure that it is able to undertake the tasks that
Government asks of it. Following a further review of this material, it has been determined
that, the names and spend for these contracts are commercially sensitive due to the nature
of the services and goods provided. As such this information relating to Crown expenditure is
withheld pursuant to sections 9(2)(b)(ii) and 9(2)(j) of the Act – to protect information where
the making available would be likely unreasonably to prejudice the commercial position of the
person who supplied the information, and to enable the Ministry to carry on, without prejudice
or disadvantage, negotiations. It is not considered the public interest in this information
outweighs the need to protect it.
Where these contracts are with other governments, this detail is protected in accordance with
section 6(a) of the Act – where release of this information would prejudice the international
relations of the Government of New Zealand.
Under section 28(3) of the Act, you have the right to request an Ombudsman to investigate
and review this response.
