I refer to your information request dated 6 May 2023 made under the Official Information Act 1982
(the Act). You have requested:
“the highest unsuccessful academic score for entry via the HSFY international category”
and for confirmation
“that the data given to me [response dated 30 March 2023] do not include students, if any,
who have been given a pre conditional offer to enter into MB ChB or BDS”.
Please see below our response to your request.
The highest unsuccessful academic score for entry via the HSFY international category.
Subject to the following comments, please see below the information you have requested:
•
the data provided is for applicants who were eligible to apply but unsuccessful in receiving an
offer to enter the MB ChB or BDS programmes via the HSFY International category.
•
it is important to note that an applicant’s average academic score is not the only factor in
determining whether an applicant is successful in receiving an offer to enter the MB ChB or
BDS programmes.
•
for privacy reasons, it is the University’s standard practice to not report on data relating to
fewer than 5 individuals. Where the numbers are very low, there is a risk that the identity of
those individuals can be determined/inferred, and their personal information (i.e. their
academic grades) could be revealed. We therefore withhold this information pursuant to
section 9(2)(a) of the Act, and data relating to fewer than 5 individuals is reported as “<5”
(fewer than 5).

That the data given to me [response dated 30 March 2023] do not include students, if any,
who have been given a pre conditional offer to enter into MB ChB or BDS.
The information provided to you in our response dated 30 March 2023, to the best of our
knowledge, included students who had been given a guaranteed (or pre-conditional offer) to enter
the MB ChB or BDS programmes via the HSFY International category.
It has also come to our attention that some of the information we provided you with in our response
dated 30 March was incorrect. Please see below where we have corrected some of the data we
provided you on 30 March (incorrect data in brackets).

Please accept our apologies for this error. I trust that this new and corrected information will be
helpful.
In the above cases, we consider that good reasons exist for withholding information, and this is not
outweighed by other considerations which would make it desirable, in the public interest, to make
the information available. If you are not satisfied with our response to your information request,
section 28(3) of the Act provides you with the right to ask an Ombudsman to investigate and review
this response. However, we would welcome the opportunity to discuss any concerns with you first.
