Connor Johnson
[FYI request #21490 email]
Dear Connor
Information Request
I refer to your previous Official Information Act 1982 (OIA) request of 20 January 2023 in which you
requested the following information:
1.
All Vehicles used and the quantity in the Palmerston North police station
2.
I would like it to be broken down by department, e.g Highway, PST, AOS etc. The Vehicle
used and the quantity of them.

3.
I would like every single car and its brand and model and its police department.
On 19 January 2023 you contacted Ministerial Services advising that you did not agree with the
response you received, as you have in the past received the exact number of vehicles located at the
Palmerston North Police Station.
Police vehicles are allocated to a district and not individual Police stations. Once the vehicle is
allocated to one of the 13 districts, it is deployed to meet the demands of its assigned district. Due to
the fluidity of district demand, it is not possible to provide a breakdown of vehicle deployments to a
town, city, or station level with any degree of accuracy. Likewise for this reason the Fleet Service
Group (PNHQ national fleet office) does not monitor the vehicle fleet down to a town, city, or station
level.
I acknowledge that previously Police provided you with figures for the number of Police vehicles
located at the Palmerston North Police Station. However, that figure was misleading as it only
provided the number of vehicles present at a specific point in time and did not represent the vehicles
available for deployment in the area serviced by that Station.
The request as it relates specifically to Palmerston North Police Station is therefore refused under
section 18(g) of the OIA as the information is not held, and I refer you to my response of 18 January
2023 for a breakdown of vehicles in Central District.
Your OIA request was also reviewed by the protective security group who have assessed the risk and
advised the information given should not include vehicles at individual Police stations. Giving exact
number of vehicles at a single Police station has the potential to leave our staff vulnerable, particularly
for smaller regional stations.
While Police will continue to disclose information relating the number of vehicles in each district and
its fleet as a whole, it cannot and will not disclose information to such a granular level as individual
stations/towns/cities.

You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this decision.
Information about how to make a complaint is available at www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or
freephone 0800 802 602.
Yours sincerely
Inspector Brian Yanko
Manager: Fleet Service Group
