Official Information Act request: data collection from social media 
Thank you for your email of 11 September 2021 to the Department of the Prime Minister and the 
Cabinet (the DPMC) requesting, under the Official Information Act 1982 (the OIA), information 
about data collection from social media performed by the Government.  Specifically,  you 
requested: 
Does the New Zealand government collect data on individuals from social media and then 
use this data to target individuals with messaging and adverts or in any other way? 
On 21 September 2021, the DPMC contacted you to advise that they were unable to respond on 
behalf of the New Zealand Government. You clarified your request to mean information from the 
DPMC, and the Ministries of Health, Justice and Social Development. 
On 24 September 2021, the DPMC informed you about the transfer of the part of the request 
relating to the Ministry of Justice, under section 14(b)(ii) of the OIA. 
In response to your request, I can confirm that the Ministry neither collects data on individuals 
from social media platforms nor uses such information for targeting individuals with messaging 
and adverts or any other purposes. 
The Ministry intends to make the information contained in this letter available to the wider public 
by publishing this response on our website. The Ministry will not release any information that 
would identify you as the person who requested the information. Therefore, all your personal 
details will be withheld. 
If you are not satisfied with my response,  you have the right to complain to the Ombudsman, 
under section 28(3) of the OIA. The Ombudsman may be contacted by email at
