Dear Samantha,
Please find a response to your 22 April 2020 follow up questions to your Official Information Act
request of 11 February 2020 regarding admission into the MB ChB programme at the University of
Otago via the NZ Rural sub-category for 2019 and 2020.
Would you please explain why there wasn't a waitlist for the graduate rural subcategory in 2019?
Were all the applicants under that category offered a place or was there a more limited number of
positions available that year?
For clarity, the intake year without a Graduate Rural sub-category waitlist was 2020 (with application
in 2019).
Taking into account the overall academic strength of the Graduate cohort across all sub-categories,
the Medical Admissions Committee determines an appropriate academic threshold above which
offers can be made to Rural Graduate sub-category applicants; this allows for some preference to be
given to Rural Graduate sub-category applicants, but not without reference to the capabilities of the
wider cohort. For the 2020 intake, all students above the determined academic threshold were
offered places and so a waitlist was not used.
Yours sincerely,
Claire Gallop
