Dear Ms Magee
Official Information Act Request – PIC line policy
Thank you for your request dated 2 August 2019 requesting a copy of the policies
and procedures in relation to the referral and prioritising of PICC lines in Waikato
DHB patients.
The Waikato DHB follow the internationally recognised Lippincott procedures for the
assessment, care and management of PICC lines. Please see procedures
document attached. Please note that this information is to be used only under the
supervision of the Waikato DHB and is not intended for use in any other practice.
In relation to the referral and prioritising of PICC lines in Waikato DHB patients,
please see attached the Peripheral Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) referral form
that is routinely completed by the referring doctor to provide clear information on a
patient’s referral criteria. The form includes a section for the completion of PICC
triage scores to help determine the prioritisation of the PICC insertion.
The decision to place a PICC, as quoted in Lippincott procedures, is part of an
interprofessional collaboration with the patient and caregiver and is based on the
prescribed therapy and treatment plan.
I trust this information provided covers your request.
Yours sincerely
Claire Tahu
Acting Chief Operating Officer
Waikato District Health Board
