Firearms Audit
I refer to your request which we received on 19 June 2019, regarding Auckland Council’s
firearms audit. I also refer to my email to you on 15 July 2019, extending the timeframe for
us to respond to your request. Thank you for your patience while we have worked on this
response. Our response to your questions is as fol ows:
1. A copy of the firearms audit report referenced in OurAuckland.
Please refer to the
attached a copy of the firearms audit report, which includes the
number of firearms owned by Auckland Council.
Please note, parts of the report which relate to the departments of the council that use
firearms, as well as any other information that might affect the safety of staff or security
of firearms and ammunition storage, has been withheld under section 6(b) of the Local
Government Official Information and Meetings Act 1987 (LGOIMA), where making this
information available would likely to endanger the safety of any person.
Please also note some content on page 13 of the report relating to the tracking of assets
is also withheld under section 7(2)(i) of LGOIMA, when it is necessary to do so to enable
council to carry on, without prejudice or disadvantage, commercial negotiations.
2. if not already included in 1, a list of all the firearms owned by Auckland Council,
and the department of the council that uses each firearm.
As mentioned above, this information has been withheld under section 6(b) of the
LGOIMA.
We are currently reviewing recommendations from the audit and our next steps wil be to
carry out implementation of these recommendations accordingly.
I hope you find this information useful. I also wish to apologise for the delay in getting this
response to you and draw your attention to your right to seek a review from the Office of the
Ombudsman about this extension.
