Hiring back of unvaccinated staff in the health sector
Erika Whittome made this Official Information request to Ministry of Health
Response to this request is long overdue. By law Ministry of Health should have responded by now (details and exceptions). The requester can complain to the Ombudsman.
From: Erika Whittome
Dear Ministry of Health,
A response to an official information act request revealed there 357 nurses, 26 doctors and 64 midwives who left as a result of the New Zealand government’s vaccination order up to March 2022 . More left after requirements for boosters. https://fyi.org.nz/request/18233/respons...
Given the vaccination orders were repealed in Sept of 2022.
Since Sept 2022, how many of these health professionals have you hired back? Please would you provide this data by dhb.
How many vacancies do you currently have for each dhb?
Yours faithfully,
Erika Whittome

Thank you for your request under the Official Information Act 1982 (the
Act) to Manatû Hauora (the Ministry of Health) on 2 September 2023.
Manatû Hauora does not hold any information relating to your request;
however, I have been advised that this information is more closely
connected to the functions of Te Whatu Ora – Health New Zealand. For this
reason, I have decided to transfer your request to their agency under
section 14(b)(ii) of the Act. You can expect a response from Te Whatu Ora
in due course.
Under section 28(3) of the Act, you have the right to ask the Ombudsman to
review any decisions made under this request. The Ombudsman may be
contacted by email at: [1][email address] or by calling 0800

I refer to your request which was transferred to Te Whatu Ora on 4
September 2023, asking for the following which has been considered under
the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act):
A response to an official information act request revealed there 357
nurses, 26 doctors and 64 midwives who left as a result of the New Zealand
government’s vaccination order up to March 2022 . More left after

This email is to let you know that Te Whatu Ora needs more time to make a
decision on your request.
The Act requires that we advise you of our decision on your request no
later than 20 working days after the day we received your request.
Unfortunately, it will not be possible to meet that time limit and we are
therefore writing to notify you of an extension of the time to make our
decision, to 31 October 2023.
This extension is required because the consultations necessary to make a
decision on your request are such that a proper response cannot reasonably
be made within the original time limit.
If you have any questions, please contact us at [2][email address]
If you are not happy with this extension, you have the right to make a
complaint to the Ombudsman. Information about how to do this is available
at www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or by phoning 0800 802 602.

Dear hnzOIA,
I am concerned that you “consult” for a decision for the response to this official information act request. The official information act requires that you answer the questions and supply the information, not “consult”.
Kindly answer the request for information with the information please which is required under the official information act.
Yours sincerely,
Erika Whittome

Dear hnzOIA,
Thank you for your response. I am still waiting on a complete answer. My question was not how many terminated staff had reentered the workforce. My question was :
how many of these health professionals have you hired back?
So that would be back to their previous positions from which you terminated them.
Yours sincerely,
Erika Whittome

Dear hnzOIA,
I have made a complaint to the Ombudsman about the delay on your answering of this request.
You shared that you have 7000+ vacancies, but you have not answered whether or not you have hired back the hundreds of health workers whose employment you terminated for not being vaccinated.
Yours sincerely,
Erika Whittome
