King Charles III’s coronation medal
john luke made this Official Information request to Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet
The request was successful.
From: john luke
Dear Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet,
Will the Government release a separate King Charles III’s coronation medal for New Zealanders.
In an FYI request in 2021, it was said that the decision as to whether New Zealand would issue its own medal is for the Prime Minister. So what is the Prime Minister's take on this matter?
Yours faithfully,
john luke

Kia ora Mr Luke
Thank you for your email.
A decision has been made by the Prime Minister. A coronation medal is not part of the planning for the events this year.
New Zealand last celebrated a coronation 70 years ago, when Queen Elizabeth II was crowned at Westminster Abbey on 2 June 1953. New Zealand marked the occasion with church services, civic parades around the country, an event on the steps of Parliament House and a gun salute from Point Jerningham. A New Zealand coronation medal was not part of the celebrations.
In recent times, New Zealand has not issued medals to mark previous Royal occasions, principally for reasons of cost and difficulty in administering. Similarly, a New Zealand Platinum Jubilee Medal was not part of the celebrations to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee on 6 February 2022.
The United Kingdom (UK) government may issue a medal to mark the coronation, as they have previously to mark Royal occasions, including Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee. The Platinum Jubilee Medal was issued to a group of individuals including serving members of the UK armed forces, representatives of the public and emergency services, members of the Royal Household and recipients of the highest gallantry and bravery medals. If a coronation medal is to be issued, a small number of New Zealanders may be eligible for the UK coronation medal. The Prime Minister will need to approve this as it is a foreign honour.
New Zealand’s Royal Honours system provides a wide range of options for recognising the services and contribution of deserving New Zealanders.
Kind regards
Cabinet Office on behalf of Rachel Hayward, Clerk of the Executive Council
