Dear Samuel

Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act 1987
Re: Art works retained/removed in Aotea Centre refurbishment

I refer to the email, which we received on 24 March 2019, requesting information on the Art
Works in Aotea Centre.

You asked :

 - Which art works were installed in the Aotea Centre prior to the current/ongoing
refurbishment, and whether these works have been or wil  be removed, replaced or retained
as part of this refurbishment;
- confirmation of whether any works removed wil  be reinstalled in their original location,
another location, or not reinstalled;
- what is proposed to happen to works that wil  not be reinstal ed;
- the details (who, when) of any consultation undertaken regarding the removal, replacement
or retention of art works in the current/ongoing Aotea Centre refurbishment.

Please see our response below.

As you are aware, the Aotea Centre is under extensive refurbishment which wil  not be fully
completed until later this year.
The important Aotea Centre art collection was carefully considered and items are in secure
storage whilst this work is undertaken.
Prior to removal, and on advice from Auckland Art Gallery, we engaged the professional
services of Liz Yuda from Artefacts Conservation Ltd who condition assessed the artworks
and has project managed the removal and safe storage to date. Liz wil  also project manage
the reinstatement of the works.
Where possible, artists were consulted with and notified in writing in advance of the removal
of the artworks into storage. Al  efforts were made to contact each artist including online
searches and through the Auckland Art Gallery artist database, however not all of the artists
were able to be found.
Not all of the artworks are immediately returning to the Aotea Centre in the same spaces
although many are, including the Aotea tapestry. Some of the previous spaces have been
redesigned and are not appropriate for the works as previously displayed.
We have also commissioned a major new New Zealand work for the foyer spaces.
