Thanks for the email. I acknowledge the importance of the bridge to the Opotiki community and district and the requests that have been made including from the Mayor
and Deputy Mayor. Given this, Rob Campbell and I will advance the cost sharing case which will need to go through our internal decision‐making processes. To initiate the
case, Rob has asked our supplier to provide an estimate of cost to:

1: clean only the road side of the bridge parapets
2: clean the whole thing
3 : clean and paint the whole lot
This will give us some options to consider which we will engage with you/your staff. We are worried that if we just clean it…the old paint will peel off and it will look even
worse.

While Opotiki has many projects on the go and many issues to deal with, the state of our main bridge keeps coming up, and is now front page news. The bridge into town is
seen as the Gateway to the town and until recently we believe we were having an annual clean as part of the SH maintenance contract. Recently we have increased our

meagre budget in parks and reserves and town is starting to look clean and tidy. As that happens the deteriorating state of the bridge is becoming more and more obvious.
You will see a response that NZTA would be keen to support the community to clean the bridge, but given the constraints on bridge cleaning (See attached resource

consent) I think this offer is problematic and a little bit irresponsible. The conditions of consent mean that there is significant risk to anyone who takes this job on without
appropriate knowledge and tools and it would be very inefficient for a community group or even Council to take this on without detailed knowledge of the asset – refer
conditions on lead paint etc.
Council and community are very clearly of the view that it is the role and responsibility of NZTA to ensure the bridge is cleaned, however we may be able to consider a cost
share. Is that something you would consider?
