Dear Liam
Official information request for the number of law students/Māori law
students
I refer to your official information request dated 9 March 2019
:
For the academic years of 2016, 2017 and 2018 (the "Period"), please provide the
following data sets:
a) “The number of students enrolled in an LLB program. If possible, it would be
helpful if this could be split into those in "pre-law" (i.e. first year) and "law
students" (i.e. those who have made it into Law School);
b) The number of students who are Māori who are enrolled in an LLB program. If
possible, it would be helpful if this could be split into those in "pre-law" (i.e. first
year) and "law students" (i.e. those who have made it into Law School); and
c) any other information related to the number/proposition of Law students to
Māori Law students at your university for the Period.”
The information you have requested is enclosed.
Please see the table below for the total number of students enrolled in the first year Law
course (LAWS121).

Please see the table below for the total number of students who have made it in to the Law
School. Students progressing to second year of the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) program must
enroll in LAWS297. Therefore, we have based the answer to this question on the enrolment
numbers for that course. Please note these figures may include students who are repeating
the course.

Entry into the second year of the LLB is limited. From 2018 the Faculty of Law now accepts
up to 330 students into the second year of the LLB each year. Prior to 2018 this limit was
300 students.
Please see the table below for the number of Māori students enrolled in LAWS121.

Please see the table below for the total number of Māori students who have been accepted
into second year of the LLB. The University has again based these figures on the enrolment
numbers for LAWS297. Therefore, we have based the answer to this question on the Māori
enrolment numbers for that course. Please note these figures may include students who are
repeating the course, as well as Māori students who gained entry based on the normal
selection criteria, rather than the Māori admissions process outlined below.

The Faculty of Law has a Māori Admissions Process for entry into the second year of the
LLB program. This is a supplementary admission process to assess tangata whenua
students for entry. Ten percent of available places into the second year program are
reserved for Māori students applying under the admissions process.
13% of all students enrolled in a program through the Faculty of Law, including
postgraduate students, during the period 2016 - 2018 were Māori students.
