Review of Tomorrow’s Schools: Video message
Kia ora I’m Bali Haque, Chair of the independent Taskforce appointed by the
Minister of Education charged with reviewing Tomorrow’s Schools.
Tomorrow’s Schools is the name given to the reforms of nearly 30 years ago
Those reforms dramatically changed the way our schools are governed,
managed and administered.
Let me give you some numbers.
Every school day
Over 800,000 students go to
Just over 2,500 schools
Are taught by over 55,000 teachers
And governed by over 19,000 hard working board of trustees members
And we spend nearly $10 Billion a year making it all happen.
These are big numbers. This is a big deal!
Our collective job as a taskforce is to look at how well the Tomorrow’s Schools
system is working, give it a good metaphorical shake and ask:
How can those currently least well served by our system get a better
Are we meeting the needs of all our Māori students, and is our system
working for Māori medium students?
How can we ensure the system is geared up to meet the uncertain,
huge, crazy, exciting future ahead of us?
And how can ensure the education system continues to produce smart,
creative, innovative, agile citizens, who can not only cope with the
challenges ahead but shape those challenges, and lead the change?
These are Big questions - but in reality they are also about some pretty basic
The lives, well-being and happiness of our children and young people
And the future of this country
This is a key moment, an opportunity to think about the possibilities of the
AND Celebrate and build on what we already doing well
We’re very interested in what you think about
How effectively boards of trustees are working?
How well schools are meeting the needs and aspirations of every child
that walks in their gate,
and how effectively schools are supported by government education
agencies in this task?
How we could improve the way schools work together,
and what the impact of increased competition between schools has
Are enrolment schemes working fairly?
How can we better assess the performance and quality of individual
schools and the schooling system as a whole?
This is really important, and we want to know what YOU think!
So please get on to our website where you can find much more about this
review, and tell us what’s working for you, what’s not working for you, and
what needs to change.
