I refer to your request to the Ministry of Health (the Ministry) of 21 September 2018 under the 
Official Information Act 1982 (the Act) for: 
Please provide me with information on the known number of heart attacks suffered in 
the human population by year and locality since  1950. 
The information that the Ministry holds in relation to your request is attached as Appendix One. 
Please note that data predating 1969 cannot be used to answer your request as it aggregates 
a number of conditions.  Data is also unavailable for the years 1975 - 1977. 
The data provided is a count of discharges,  not people.  A person may appear multiple times 
in a  cell,  row or  column.  This  is a  count  of people  who have  been  hospitalised  for  a heart 
attack; this may not be the whole population of people who have had heart attacks. 
I  trust this information fulfils your request.  You have the right,  under section 28 of the Act,  to 
ask the Ombudsman to review any decisions made under this request.
