Thank you for your email via the FYI website dated 20 April 2018 requesting the following information
under the Official Act 1982 (the Act). “The number of retests people have taken before they finally achieve a pass in their restricted and full
licenses. This can be displayed as the average number of fails before a pass with standard deviation.
Alternatively, you can do a frequent chart of number of fails before test. E.g. 2500 people failed
0/1/2/3/4/5/6/7/8/9/10+ times before pass their restricted/full.
The ideal timeframe would be post-2014.Bonus if you can divide by suburb and/or gender.”
The information requested has been provided to you in the attached spreadsheet. Please note that:
The information was extracted from the Driver Licence Register (DLR) and is current as at 1
The data is limited to Class 1 (Car) restricted and full licence tests sat as part of the Graduated
Driver Licensing System (GDLS) only.
The data is limited to tests passed between 1 January 2014 to 31 March 2018, and will include
counts of previous test attempts prior to 1 January 2014.
The data is a count of tests passed, not the number of applicants who passed a test. The data
includes a small number of applicants sitting and passing their restricted licence test twice to
have the "Automatic transmission vehicles only to be used" condition removed from their
driver licence. The condition "Automatic transmission vehicles only to be used" is added to a
driver's licence if the restricted licence test is passed in an automatic vehicle.
The data is limited to sat tests only. Sat tests refer to tests resulted as pass, fail, or stopped
