Thank you for your email dated 14 February 2018 in which you requested details of how many firearms 
were legally imported for the last five years.  You have requested these details to be listed by year and 
category of firearm. 
 
The request has been treated as a request for information under the Official Information Act 1982.  
 
Please find attached a document that provides you with information that Customs holds on the number 
of firearms legally imported into New Zealand from 1 January 2013 to 31 December 2017.  These 
numbers only include those firearms imported into New Zealand where the importer is required to 
declare the quantity.   
 
Please note that it is not necessary for an importer to declare the quantity of some types of firearms at 
the time of importation, for example pistols and revolvers, therefore Customs does not record this 
information.  Customs also does not record information on importations of firearms where no import 
entry is required, for example passenger’s firearms.
