Multi-storey buildings policy 
This policy describes the requirements for NZFS personnel when attending fire incidents at 
1982
multi-storey buildings. 
This policy must be read alongside the Guidelines for Operational Policies and Procedures, 
and any local procedures that have been developed for your Area. 
Act 
Definition 
A multi-storey building is a: 
  building of six floors or more, taken from the lowest point of Fire 
Service access, or 
  a building in which a riser system has been fit ed. 
When to apply 
NZFS personnel wil  follow the requirements of this policy: 
  during fire incidents involving multi-storey buildings 
  at other incidents where the OIC determines that there is an 
operational benefit. 
Information 
What to do 
During fire incidents involving multi-storey buildings, NZFS personnel 
wil  follow the procedures in: 
  S1 SOP Multi-storey buildings procedure NZFS  
  any local procedures that have been developed for their Area. 
Local 
Area Management may develop local procedures for multi-storey fire 
procedures 
incidents if: 
Official 
  first alarm attendance is greater than two pumps, or 
  there is an identified need, for a specific building or complex. 
Local procedures may provide more detail regarding response. These 
the 
wil  not contradict the national policy and procedure (S1 POP and SOP), 
however tasks and roles may be allocated differently to the national 
policy and procedure if appropriate, as resources available wil  differ. 
In Areas where local procedures have been signed off by the Area 
Manager, these must be used in conjunction with the national

Site reports for multi-storey buildings wil  follow the requirements 
described in: 
  S1 SOP Multi-storey buildings procedure 
  RD2 Operational planning (policy, procedure and guide).

storey buildings procedure when attending incidents where:
-  external firefighting is limited, or not possible 
-  there is a significant distance between the fire and the 
nearest practicable external command point. 
Area Managers 
Area Managers have responsibility for:

buildings, following the requirements described in this policy
 developing and authorising local multi-storey procedures where
required.
