Request for Official Information
Thank you for your email to the New Zealand Customs Service (Customs) dated 19 October 2016, in which
you requested the following information:
1. How much of our [seafood] sold and consumed in NZ is imported?
2. How much imported seafood is checked and tested?
3. What precautions are taken to ensure that antibiotics, antifungals and antiparasitics are not in
imported seafood?
4. Does Customs recognize the Country of Origin Labelling CoOL requirements?
5. What oversight or monitoring is done or carried out to ensure the correct regulations are adhered
too?
6. What monitoring is done to ensure that restaurants, processed fish – fish markets indicate where
their fish comes from and whether they were farmed or wild caught?
Your request has been treated as a request for information under the Official Information Act 1982 (the
Act).
I understand you requested the same information from the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) and they
provided most of the information you were seeking, but that they advised you to contact Customs and
Statistics New Zealand (Statistics NZ) for information in relation to question 1.

1, with information on Seafood to be found in Chapters 3 and 16. I am, therefore, refusing your request
under section 18(d) of the Act.

codes for the types of seafood you are interested in. Our information can also be broken down by
country of origin and either monthly or yearly aggregates.
