Thank you for contacting Auckland Transport on 24 April 2016 requesting the following information: 
Following  the  pending/possible  sale  of  former  rail  equipment  (SA/SD  carriages  and  ex  Perth  DMU's) 
previously  used  in  Auckland,  has  any  consideration  be  given  to  local  preservation  of  some examples 
these rail vehicles for future generations? 
Auckland Transport  can  confirm that a decision was  made to  sell  the  diesel hauled units  once  they  had  been 
retired from service.  The sale process has been undertaken by way of a public tender with the objective of selling 
units as a collective rather than the units going to various buyers. 
The cost to keep units stored and in running condition is uneconomical and is not the best use of ratepayers funds 
however, if a New Zealand based organisation was prepared to purchase some or all of the units then this would 
have been considered as the first and preferable option. 
We  trust  the  information  has  addressed  the  matters  raised  however,  should  you  believe  that  we  have  not 
responded appropriately to your request, you have the right in accordance with section 27(3) of the LGOIMA to 
make a complaint to the Office of the Ombudsman to seek an investigation and review in regard to this matter.
