Dear Mr Grainger
Official Information Act Request
1.
Thank
you
for
your
e-mail
of 9 August
2012
requesting
the
reasons
for the
New Zealand
Security
Intelligence
Service (NZSIS) withholding,
under section 6(a) of the
Official
Information
Act 1982 (alA),
the job titles of those currently
holding Top Secret
(Special) security clearances.
2.
I draw your attention to the text at paragraph
2(a) of my response
to your original
request (my reference 2906647 dated 25 June 2012), which reads:
A Top
Secret
(Special)
security
clearance
is required
of the
staff
members
of
intelligence
organisations
who may have frequent
access to the highest
levels of
national security information.
3.
Many of the job titles of those holding Top Secret (Special) clearances
identify roles,
responsibilities
or areas of interest in the respective organisations.
To provide a list of job
titles would readily enable the structure, current priorities and staff numbers of the various
intelligence
organisations
to
be
determined.
Given
the
sensitive
nature
of
these
organisations
and their work, I am sure you will understand
why it is necessary
for this
information to be withheld under section 6(a) of the alA
4.
If you are unhappy with this response you have the right, under section 28(1) of the
alA, to make a complaint to an Ombudsman and seek an investigation of my decision.
Yours sincerely
Dr Warren Tucker
Director of Security
