Re: Official Information Act (OIA) Request – Board member benefits 
Thank you for your OIA request, which was partially transferred to Te Papa on 30 June 
2026, requesting the following information:  
Besides meeting fees, do [appointees to Te Papa Board] receive any other 
benefits, such as expense reimbursement (If so, may I request to view your 
expense reimbursement policy in relation to your board member), a laptop, ID 
card, phone, or similar provisions? 
Te Papa either books directly, or reimburses, travel expenses incurred by Board members 
while undertaking Board business. These arrangements are made to enable members to 
fulfil their governance responsibilities and are not considered additional benefits. 
Board members are issued a Te Papa security access (swipe) card to enable entry to Te 
Papa premises for the purpose of attending Board and committee meetings and carrying 
out their duties. This is provided solely for operational purposes rather than as a benefit. 
At bi-monthly Board meetings, Te Papa provides Board members with Te Papa Press 
publications  where  new  titles  have  been  released.  These  are  intended  to  support 
members in developing a deeper understanding of Te Papa’s collections, programmes, 
and wider activities, and to assist them in their role as advocates for the museum within 
their networks and communities. To date, the newly appointed Board members have not 
received any Te Papa Press publications. 
Te  Papa  does  not  maintain  a  formal  expense  reimbursement  policy  specific  to  Board 
members. Accordingly, this part of your request is refused under section 18(d) of the OIA, 
as the information requested is not held.
