Request made under the Official Information Act 1982
Thank you for your email of 29 May 2026 requesting the fol owing information under the Official
Information Act 1982 (the Act):
What enforcement tolerance is currently applied to NZTA-operated fixed speed cameras?
Does NZTA set the enforcement threshold, or is it set by NZ Police?
If NZTA does not set the threshold, please provide the document or agreement that states
Police are responsible.
If NZTA does set the threshold, please provide:
a. The current threshold
b. The date it was set
c. The person or team who authorised it
The purpose of safety cameras is to encourage road users to observe the legal speed limit and to
observe redlight traffic signals. A safety camera notice can be issued when a vehicle is detected
travelling at any speed exceeding the legal speed limit.
Your request for information relating to enforcement tolerances, including whether a threshold is set
and any associated documentation, is being withheld in ful under section 6(c) of the Act. This
provision applies where release would be likely to prejudice the maintenance of the law, including the
prevention, investigation, and detection of offences.
Under section 28 of the Act, you have the right to ask the Ombudsman to review my decision to
withhold this information. The contact details for the Ombudsman can be located at
www.ombudsman.parliament.nz.
