Request for information
I refer to your Official Information Act 1982 (OIA) request dated 20 May 2026, in which you
requested the following information:
1. Al Vehicles used and the quantity in the Nelson Police Station.
2. Al vehicles used and the quantity in the Tasman District
3. I would like it to be broken down by department, e.g Highway, PST, AOS etc.
4. The Vehicle used and the quantity of them.
5. If vehicles are moved between regions on a regular basis then please provide an
average number.
6. I would like it broken down by station/area e.g. all vehicles based out of Nelson Central,
Richmond, etc.
7. I would like every single vehicle and its registration, make/brand and model, and colour.
In response to your questions:
•
The Tasman District fleet comprises 152 vehicles.
•
The fleet is primarily made up of Skoda vehicles (predominantly Superb and Kodiaq
models), supported by a mix of legacy Holden vehicles and utility platforms (e.g.,
Ranger, Colorado, Triton) used for specialist and rural operations.
•
The majority of vehicles are assigned to General Duties, with additional allocation
across CIB, Highway Patrol, and Road Policing, and smaller numbers supporting
specialist functions such as Dog Section, Prisoner Transport, and ICT.
•
Vehicles are distributed across the district, with the largest concentrations in Nelson,
Blenheim, and Greymouth, supplemented by coverage in smaller and rural locations to
support operational requirements.
•
Vehicles are not routinely moved between districts on a scheduled or regular basis.
From time to time, vehicles may be temporarily reallocated to support operational
requirements or respond to specific events, however these movements occur on an
as-needed basis and are not tracked as part of a regular programme. As such, there is
no meaningful average number available.
The attached dataset provides the full breakdown by functional group, make/model, colour, and
location for transparency.

Please note that vehicle registration numbers have been withheld under section 6(c) of the OIA,
as their release could be likely to prejudice the maintenance of the law, including the prevention,
investigation, and detection of offences and the right to a fair trial.
This information relates to New Zealand Police-owned vehicles only within Tasman District. It
excludes leased vehicles, trailers, and a small number of specialised operational fleet groups,
the details of which have been withheld to avoid compromising operational effectiveness.
If you are not satisfied with any aspect of the decisions made in this response you are entitled to
complain to the Office of the Ombudsman and seek an investigation and review.
