Hi Lucy and Callum,

Appreciate the work you have put into this to date.

The next flagged spray day is set for Tuesday 3 March. Are you both available to undertake
monitoring again then if it goes ahead (weather dependent)?

This time round you should be able to see the spraying in action and meet the drone operators.
They will also have their own H&S advice for you re the spraying. I will find out more and let you
know as soon as possible.

Sample bottles (100ml Watercare bottles) x 2 (extra in case along with some larger bottles
if needing to use the sampling pole to decanting.
PPE
Long longs (pants and shirt)

Itinerary
25 February 2026

Meet at Albany office

Head to
to take first sample for between 8 am and 8:30 am.
1 x sample (upstream)
Contact landowner
if need be but   is expecting you.
Sample will be
Head to Te Henga Walkway Car Park and further down Bethells Road there should be
closer access to the Waitakere River (to take a downstream sample)
Unsure of access – it looks like a good location, but you may need to walk around a
bit to find the best spot.
1 x sample (downstream).
Spraying will start at 9am
See attached Map – area 1 on the map will be sprayed tomorrow.
Head along Bethells Road to a good vantage point to view the spraying for 15 – 20
minutes.
Main idea is to have some presence for the community.

26 February 2026
Head to site at a convenient time (morning probably best)
Take samples at the same to locations (upstream and downstream)
2x samples

Regulations to Check Compliance against
See attached ‘Regulations’

As discussed, there are some disgruntled community members, so if you feel unsafe at any time
please leave the site.

Let me know if you have any questions. I will have my phone on me tomorrow so feel free to reach
out if you have any queries.

Thanks James for clarifying – and I hope you recover quickly.

At this stage all items to monitor are permitted. I will send more details tomorrow.

The site will be granted a Mat Pan (under section 87(b)(b)) issued today.

We will also be taking water samples and testing for glyphosate (Watercare labs). This has been
approved by Rob. We will need to take samples before and after the spraying to get a baseline
and post spraying levels (upstream, at spraying location, and downstream) – so 6 samples in
total. Watercare have confirmed they need 100ml samples in plastic bottles.

A kayak may be required for sampling in the wetland at the spraying location. I will confirm after
speaking to Matuku Trust.

I suggest PPE of a P2.5 mask (while they are spraying), eye protection, and long longs.

Hi Maxine

I will not be able to attend due to an injury ( I am in a moon boot). I can potentially get another
compliance officer to attend.

It was my understanding that a compliance officer was to assist the regional environment al
officer. This is what I was advised.

I was also advised that the principal specialist of pollution was to provide some sort of checklist.

To date I do not have any copy of what their permit/resource consent conditions are so the CO
will be unaware of what to actually monitor.

If you could advise on what to monitor and which EMO will be attending, I will pass this onto who
ever Grant suggests should also attend.

Regards

Hi James,

See below for the proposed spraying dates for Te Henga Wetland.

The forecast for coming Wednesday 25th of February is looking favourable to do the
willow control drone spraying. They will work on the willows on the Mokoroa arm
(northern part) of the wetland.

The rest of the week the weather forecast is with either too much rain or too much
wind to do any work. The next day which currently looks like a possibility is Tuesday
3rd of March.  We will let you know closer to the time.
Do you have sufficient PPE to monitor this activity? Ideally you would have coveralls, mask,
goggles (just in case of spray drift).

I am also thinking one of our team should attend site with you due to vexatious community
members, but also so all bases are covered and there are two of you on site for H&S purposes.

The spraying spans across multiple properties so any staff attending will just need to inform the

Hello all

The survey over the wetland identified that last year's willow control has been very
successful. The remaining 20% of crack willows will be dealt with in the next couple of
weeks, as the summer has been wet and windy up till now. This will require approximately
5 days of spraying, with the first possible spray day Wednesday 25th of February - of course
work will only proceed if all weather conditions are favourable. Signs have been erected
today as requested by the community. The Boffa Miskell monitoring report done after the
2025 willow control can be downloaded from the website as well.
For those of you new to this email list:
We promised to keep you informed about the spray part of our willow control project aimed
at increasing habitat for native species, including the matuku-hūrepo (bittern), the puweto
(spotless crake), pateke (brown teal) and many others. Since 16th January 2025 there have
been 10 days of drone spraying of the largest clusters of willows on private land, on days
when the weather was favourable, with products approved by the EPA (Environmental
Protection Authority) and Auckland Council and done by David Hall from Phylogeny who
has all the appropriate certifications to do this work.
Water samples have been taken and results are on our website (less than 0.0010 mg/litre
which is the same as before the spraying).
We've sent this information to those who requested updates via email. If you'd like to be
added to our mailing list, please contact us at [email address]. More information
