Dear Grant
Request for information
Thank you for your Official Information Act 1982 (OIA) request received on 2 April 2026
regarding the new Commercial Vehicle Safety Centres in Rakaia. I have answered each
part of your request below.
1. How many police staff are allocated to work at these centres.
The Commercial Vehicle Safety Centres in Rakaia are staffed by one Sergeant, two
Constables, and two Vehicle Safety Officers. Other Commercial Vehicle Safety Team
(CVST) staff from the wider Canterbury district may operate from these sites as required.
2. How many NZTA staff are allocated to work at these centres.
There are no NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) staff permanently or specifical y al ocated to
work at these centres. NZTA staff may operate from the sites on an as-needed basis, for
example during scheduled operations, but this is not a regular or ongoing arrangement.
3. What hours are the police staff al ocated to these centres rostered to work.
CVST staff operate on rolling rosters, with primary hours of operation between 0600 and
2200 hours. Deployment outside these hours, including night operations, occurs when
operationally required.
4. What hours are the NZTA staff al ocated to these centres rostered to work.
As noted in my response to question 2, there are no NZTA staff permanently al ocated to
these centres. Accordingly, there are no fixed hours specific to these locations.
