OFFICIAL INFORMATION REQUEST RE NELSON CITY COUNCIL PARK RANGERS 
I refer to your official information request dated 2 April 2026 for request regarding Nelson City 
Council Park Rangers made via the FYI website.  
The information you requested is enclosed. 
1.  Does the council employ park rangers, who are responsible for or patrol certain 
areas? 
Nelson City Council contract out this work, one of the contractors have job titles of 
“Conservation Ranger” and another has “Caretakers” within the Maitai and Roding water 
reserves.  
2.  What assets do they cover? local parks, forests, etc? 
The Conservation Rangers cover all Landscape, Conservation and Rural Esplanade reserves. 
Caretakers cover the Maitai and Roding water catchment reserves. 
3.  How many staff are employed? 
There are approximately 30 Conservation Rangers. There is one fulltime and one part time 
(Relief Caretaker) at each water reserve.  
4.  Do they have a roster system that covers 7 days a week or on call? 
The Caretakers are always on site and have relievers who provide cover when they are on 
annual leave, sick leave or for weekends 
5.  Are any trained in firefighting? if so, how many? 
Whilst firefighting is not a contractual requirement, our understanding is there are currently 
four contractors trained in rural fire fighting.  
6. Does the council have any "live in" park rangers, i.e. on the site of a park/forest? 
Only the previously mentioned caretakers in the Maitai and Roding water reserves.
