Tēnā koe John
I refer to your requests received by Hon Mark Mitchell’s office on 29 and 31 March
2026, which were transferred to the Ministry for Culture and Heritage (the Ministry) on
30 March and 1 April 2026, regarding appointments to the Sport New Zealand (Sport
NZ) Board and the Sport Integrity Commission Board respectively. Your requests have
been considered under the Official Information Act 1982 (OIA).
For both entities you requested the following information:
•
How the Ministry called for public nomination and on what platforms.
•
A copy of the advertisement for the vacancy and the pay rate.
•
How many applications the Ministry received, including how many from the
public and how many from other nominating agencies.
•
How many applicants have been shortlisted and how many interviewed.
•
A copy of the appointment letter sent to each appointee, with personal
information removed.
And for the Sport Integrity Commission, you also requested:
•
Whether Board members receive any benefits beside meeting fees and, if so,
to be provided with the Commission’s expense reimbursement policy for Board
members.
Sport NZ Board appointments
Appointments to the Sport NZ Board are made in accordance with the Sport and
Recreation New Zealand Act 2002 and the Crown Entities Act 2004. As these Acts do
not require a public call for nominations, no public advertisement was created and no
applications were received. The pay rate for these positions is set in accordance with
the Cabinet Fees Framework and is outlined in the appointment letters being released.
Instead, candidates were selected from several sources, including the Ministry
nominations register, which comprises members of the public who have expressed
interest in Crown board roles, individuals considered suitable from previous
nominations, and nominations from caucus and coalition party colleagues. For these
appointments, the Ministry received three nominations from Government nominating
agencies. All three nominations came from Te Puni Kōkiri.
From these nominations, four candidates were shortlisted and three were interviewed.
Sport Integrity Commission Board appointments
Appointments to the Sport Integrity Commission are made by the Governor-General
on my recommendation, in accordance with the Integrity Sport and Recreation Act
2023 and the Crown Entities Act 2004. As these Acts do not require a public call for
nominations, no public advertisement was created and no applications were received.
The pay rate for these positions is set in by the Remuneration Authority.
